our international journey began in Nicaragua

In 1990, DHF launched its first project in Nicaragua, and we have co-operated with the disability movement there ever since.

Nicaragua is located in Central America with a population of approximately 6 million people, of which 10 percent are estimated to have a disability.

Our initial work comprised support for income-generating projects for people with disabilities, but since 1995, our supportive work has revolved around strengthening the administrative and organisational capacity of the disability movement, as well as supporting its capacity to carry out advocacy work.

Nicaragua has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its optional protocol, and due to positive development, we estimate that the Nicaraguan disability movement is now able to retain and attract new members on its own. Furthermore, the movement is able to administer funds in a transparent way and it has obtained a democratic structure, where the members are influential and have the capacity to seek funds for projects, and to complete them.

For these reasons, DHF closed its office in Nicaragua in 2013, and by the end of 2016 all of our financial support has ceased. However, we are still in contact with former partners on a regular basis for exchange of experiences.
