In Uganda, DHF collaborates with Uganda National Action of Physically Disabled (UNAPD), which counts about 4,000 members, all with physical disabilities. This collaboration has existed since 2002, and we have made a series of projects with the overall goal to develop the organisation to become a strong nationwide organisation with status of mouthpiece for physically disabled people in Uganda.
Currently the collaboration concerns a bigger project financed by the Project Advice and Training Center (PATC) as well as a smaller project financed by the Mini Programme of the Disabled Peoples Organisations Denmark (DPOD). The big project focuses on organisational development at the national level as well as in eight selected districts. Besides, it supports a campaign for better accessibility in Uganda. The small project focuses on the establishment of three special branches for rheumatics, women and young people, respectively.
Through the DPOD staff programme, we have employed a development worker in UNAPD in the years 2005 and 2006 as well as since 2008. Since the beginning of the collaboration, UNAPD has more than doubled the activities and number of members.
Elements of the collaboration with UNAPD:
- Four pilot studies for projects which have resulted in two accomplished projects and two ongoing projects.
- Shipment of a container with assistive.
- Visit from the chairman of UNAPD, James Mwanda, former Member of the Ugandan Parliament.
- Organising six students, members of UNAPD, to participate in the Global line of Egmont Højskole.
- Ensured financing of a national conference for a broad range of disabled groups in Uganda
